Empty before refilling

Take everything out of the pouch and inspect the lining, seams and fastenings. Remove crumbs, old receipts and anything damp. Clean according to the product instructions and let it dry fully. Adding fresh rewards on top of old debris makes it harder to notice what needs replacing.

Check that the pouch closes securely and can be worn without swinging into the dog or interfering with lead handling. A clip-on accessory should not overload the same connection that secures the lead. Keep the arrangement simple enough to operate while maintaining attention to the surroundings.

Pack for the actual outing

Add enough waste bags and suitable rewards for the planned walk, with a modest spare supply. Follow food storage directions and do not carry perishable rewards beyond appropriate conditions. Include any necessary contact or access information in a protected place, while avoiding unnecessary personal documents.

Consider whether the outing also requires water, a bowl or weather-appropriate equipment carried separately. A small pouch is not a complete kit for every route. Check the planned duration, conditions and distance from home rather than assuming yesterday's contents cover today's walk.

Make the handover obvious

If more than one person uses the pouch, agree where it lives and what a ready pouch contains. Restock after an outing or at a predictable daily moment, rather than leaving an empty bag on the hook that normally means ready to go. Keep food-filled equipment beyond the dog's reach.

During the walk, use rewards thoughtfully and account for them in the usual feeding arrangement. Keep attention on safe handling rather than searching through several compartments at a crossing. After returning, remove damp or unsuitable leftovers and note anything that ran short. A useful pouch supports the walk quietly; it should not become a heavy collection of gadgets that makes basic equipment harder to reach.
