Ask questions that describe your dog’s needs

Confirm dog numbers, fees, permitted rooms and any rule about leaving dogs alone. Ask what “enclosed garden” means in practice: boundary type, gate arrangement and whether another guest shares the space. A host’s description is a starting point, not a guarantee that every dog can use an outdoor area unsupervised.

Check stairs, slippery flooring and the location of the sleeping space. If your dog normally rests near you, a property that prohibits dogs on the bedroom floor may require a different plan. Clarify these details before booking rather than assuming you can negotiate a change on arrival.

Inspect before allowing free exploration

Keep your dog supervised while checking doors, garden exits and accessible household items. Put low food, bins and cleaning materials out of reach where the property arrangement allows. Do not move safety equipment or alter the property to make an unsuitable space usable.

Choose a quiet resting spot and unpack the essentials there first. Familiar bedding, usual food and normal bowls reduce the number of changes you introduce at once. Take an easy toilet outing and leave the ambitious local excursion for another time. Arrival already involves transport, new smells and unfamiliar movement around the dog.

Make the stay compatible with the dog

Plan meals, shopping and attractions around who is caring for your dog. If an activity excludes dogs, arrange suitable care or change the itinerary; do not assume being on holiday makes unfamiliar isolation comfortable. Confirm emergency veterinary options and follow your vet’s advice about any travel-related health preparations.

Before departure, check the accommodation while one person manages the dog away from open doors. Repack familiar items last where practical so the resting area remains available during the busy transition. Keep a note of useful property features for future trips: a quiet entrance, easy outdoor access or fewer stairs may matter much more than decorative dog-friendly extras.
