Pack a dog bag that travels with you
Set aside usual food, bowls, bedding, walking equipment, waste bags and any supplies required by existing veterinary instructions. Put contact information and relevant records somewhere accessible. These items should not disappear into a general box that will be unloaded at the end of the day.
Arrange suitable care while furniture is being carried. A familiar carer or secure quiet room may work, depending on the dog and the building. Tell everyone involved where the dog will be and which doors must remain closed. Never rely on movers noticing the dog while balancing a large object through an entrance.
Prepare one usable area in the new home
Before allowing exploration, inspect doors, windows, accessible cables and outdoor boundaries. An apparently fenced garden still needs checking for gaps and insecure gates. Keep the dog supervised and managed during that inspection rather than using their first circuit to discover the weak point.
Set up water and a familiar resting place in a quieter area. Introduce a suitable toilet location, then leave time to settle without a welcoming party. Keep the first outing nearby and straightforward so you can learn the immediate surroundings while maintaining an easy return to the house.
Restore the routine in practical pieces
Unpack the supplies you need for the next meal and walk before adding decorative extras. Use familiar cues and normal care sequences where they remain appropriate, while recognising that the new layout may require changes. A bed beside the old kitchen door may not work beside a noisy new entrance.
Update identification and contact records through the relevant services when your details change. Arrange ongoing care around your dog’s comfort in the new setting rather than assuming previous alone-time arrangements transfer immediately. Record useful observations during the first days: a slippery hallway, a loud shared door or a calmer walking direction. Address those concrete details instead of judging the move by an expected settling deadline.
