Get down to the relevant level

Walk through the room, then lower your viewpoint to inspect beneath chairs, beside appliances and under low shelving. Look for dropped medication, coins, children's toys, hair ties and food packaging. A room can appear clear at standing height while offering many small objects near the floor.

Trace electrical cables from the socket to the device. Secure or block access without creating loose loops the puppy can investigate. Move cleaning products and medicines into properly closed storage. Do not assume a bitter spray or a spoken warning makes an accessible hazard safe.

Check what can move

Test lightweight bins, trailing tablecloths and bags left on chairs. A puppy pulling one reachable edge can bring the contents down. Put handbags away, since they may contain food, medicines or other items that should never become play objects. Check that doors cannot swing unexpectedly onto the puppy.

Consider the spaces around furniture as well as the objects themselves. Block awkward gaps safely and make sure barriers are stable. Avoid improvised stacks that could fall when leaned against. If the puppy will spend time in several rooms, inspect each one rather than assuming that the same precautions cover every layout.

Create something suitable to do

Provide a few appropriate supervised activities and a comfortable resting place after removing hazards. The aim is not an empty room where the puppy is repeatedly told to stop exploring. Offer suitable toys matched to their size and behaviour, then inspect those items for damage during use.

Repeat the check as access changes

Repeat the check as the puppy grows and learns to climb or reach farther. Visitors and children can accidentally reintroduce small objects within minutes, so make tidying part of the household routine. If you suspect something hazardous has been swallowed, contact a veterinarian promptly and identify the item if possible; do not wait for a floor-level checklist to explain what happened. Prevention works best when the environment keeps changing with the puppy.
