Make the carrier stable and inviting

Choose a carrier appropriate for the dog and its intended use, checking dimensions, ventilation and fastening instructions. Place it on a stable surface where it cannot slide or tip as the dog investigates. Secure the door open so it cannot swing against them unexpectedly. Add a suitable familiar layer if that does not interfere with the carrier design.

Start in a quiet room with space to approach and move away. Do not place the carrier directly in the only route to water or a doorway. The dog should be able to ignore it while continuing ordinary life nearby.

Reward voluntary investigation

Allow looking, sniffing and stepping closer without pushing the dog inside. Suitable rewards can help create a pleasant association, but place them at an easy distance first. A dog stretching in to reach food while keeping their feet outside is telling you that fully entering may still be difficult.

Let the dog come back out whenever they choose. Avoid closing the door the first time they enter, even if you feel excited about progress. Repeat comfortable entries and exits before introducing another change. Some dogs will investigate quickly; others need several small opportunities across different days.

Add closure and movement separately

When the dog is comfortable inside, introduce tiny door movements and reopen before discomfort appears. Build this separately from carrying or car travel. A quiet carrier on the floor and a lifted carrier with a moving handle are different experiences.

Keep the carrier familiar between trips

Follow manufacturer guidance for lifting and securing the carrier, and never assume a soft-sided design is suitable for every transport arrangement. If your dog shows established confinement fear or cannot settle, seek individual support instead of extending the time until they stop protesting. Keep ordinary comfortable carrier experiences in the routine after travel begins, so it does not predict only unfamiliar destinations. Preparation is most useful when it starts well before a necessary journey.
