What Human Foods Should Your Dog Eat?

Is it safe to give my dog human food?

What foods do you give your dog? Many of us treat our dogs as family and as a result, we tend to give them the same food that we eat. The truth is that your dog is omnivores just like his best friend and can eat most of the foods that you eat.

However many of the foods that you give to your dog actually harm it because they contain chemicals that a dog’s body cannot handle.

So what human foods can your dog it what should you not give it? To understand better let’s consider these three groups of food: fruits, vegetables, and Nuts.

Fruits

Fruits are a fantastic source of vitamins, minerals like potassium, calcium and manganese and dietary fiber in your dog’s diet. Fruits also play an important role in keeping clean your dog’s teeth and the breath fresh. So what fruits can your dog eat?

  • Strawberries

It is important to remember that some fruits can be dangerous to the health of your dog.  Some can cause toxic reactions in the digestive system of your furry friend and can damage vital internal organs. While many others cause a problem with the digestion system of your dog and it may result in vomiting or diarrhea or even loss of appetite.

Some of the fruits that your dog should not eat are:

  • Grapes
  • Raisins
  • Avocado
  • Lemons
  • Limes

Some fruits should be given to your dogs in small quantities. They provide useful nutrients, minerals, and vitamins but if eaten in large quantities can cause serious problems such as stomach upsets, seizures, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and even food poisoning among other things. Some of the fruits you should only allow your dog to eat in small quantities include:

  • Oranges
  • Tomatoes
  • Cherries

Vegetables

Many vegetables are completely safe for your dog. They provide all the important vitamins, minerals, proteins and dietary fibers that your dog needs to be healthy. Some of the vegetables that you should consider feeding your dog are:

  • Peas
  • Sweet potato
  • Beans
  • Carrots
  • Cabbage
  • Potatoes

Remember some vegetables contain poisonous chemicals and may be harmful to the health of your dog. Some cause vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and lack of appetite among others. You should, therefore, be careful not to give your dog such vegetables. Some of the vegetable you should never allow your dog to eat include:

  • Mushrooms
  • Onions
  • Garlic

Nuts

Vegetables fruits and some nuts are great for your dog. They provide important vitamins, minerals, and fats while others have other dangerous chemicals that can harm your dog. It is thus important to know which nuts are good for your dog. Some of the important nuts you can give to your dog include:

  • Cashews
  • Coconut
  • Peanuts
  • Hazelnuts

Some of the nut and nut derived foods that your dog should never eat include:

  • Macadamia Nuts
  • Almonds
  • Walnuts
  • Pecans
  • Pistachios
  • Hickory Nuts

It is important to remember that feeding your dog human food is not always the best option. However, giving it some of the foods listed here to be beneficial and can help improve the health of your dog by injecting some color and freshness into its eating. Eating too many commercial foods can be monotonous to your dog.
